Safeguarding in Esports

Overview

Esports are becoming more and more popular among children and young people, with research showing that the majority of young gamers engage with esports content through playing, watching, or live streaming. As this popularity grows, so too must our understanding of these platforms and how to keep young people safe while they enjoy them.

Participants will gain insights into key aspects of esports, including tournament structures, industry regulations, and player welfare. The session will address mental health, principles of fair play, and strategies for managing risks to create a safe and secure environment for young players.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Learn about how esports tournaments and gaming communities are structured, as well as relevant guidance and legislation.
  • Discover why young people are drawn to esports, both as players and spectators, across amateur and professional levels.
  • Understand the role of live streaming and the influence gaming personalities can have on young minds.
  • Learn how to spot safeguarding risks and take steps to mitigate online harms in gaming environments.
