Responding to Those Who Pose Risk in Church Settings

Overview

This training equips safeguarding practitioners in faith settings to assess and manage risks posed by individuals, including those who have sexually harmed. It enhances understanding of risk in varied roles and contexts. It covers various types of risk, conducting risk assessments, implementing safety plans and emphasises the importance of communication, collaboration, monitoring procedures and enhancing knowledge of relevant policies for a safer faith based environment. The course explores behaviours such as minimisation and blame-shifting, and offers practical tools for real-world safeguarding challenges. Interactive workshops provide space to develop and evaluate risk management strategies.

Learning Objectives

Participants will:

  • Identify and assess various safeguarding risks that individuals may pose within church settings, including those related to known convictions, allegations of abuse, and challenging behaviours.
  • Develop and implement risk management strategies, including the creation, monitoring and application of effective safety plans.
  • Apply insights into the thought processes and motivations of perpetrators to develop stronger early intervention and risk mitigation strategies. This is especially for those in safeguarding roles who support parishes (i.e. incumbents and volunteers) working directly with sexual offenders.
  • Apply risk assessment tools and techniques to evaluate potential risks in specific scenarios, and determine appropriate actions to manage those risks.
  • Support the church community, including the point of contact, while maintaining confidentiality.
